We were invited to design an upscale cocktail bar within the Park Hotel, Kolkata.

Inspiration was drawn from the distressed shell of the site that had over the years undergone layers of intervention. The concept was to leave the basic shell intact, making essential mechanical changes and touching it up in a way that would be quite inconspicuous.

The spatial concept is simple. Since the space is linear 100ft long and narrow, we chose to create a bar near the entrance, set back into a niche. Hovering above the bar is a glowing mezzanine, beyond which is a large uninterrupted 16ft high volume.

A floating mezzanine was created, that would distinguish itself from the surrounding shell in terms of form, texture, and luminescence. This innovative form was made out of a tubular steel construction and sheathed in a translucent resin material with LED lighting hidden intelligently within its walls. Bathed in a cold aqua hue, this futuristic form hovers ethereally within the warmth of the old shell, barely touched by the four mechanical arms cradling it.

A dramatic installation of polished aluminum concave ovals forms a shimmering texture against the contrasting distressed brick masonry wall.

A fairly vast palette of materials – brushed brass, zebrano veneer, polished aluminum, sandblasted resin, rust chenille, metallic leathers and faux furs all coexist within a shell of steel, brick, sandstone, concrete and wood.

The design pays tribute to the swinging 1960’s, an era that saw nightlife on Park street at its best.
